Abstract

With increasing numbers surviviing into extreme old ago, and with improvements in medical care which enable people to survive the multiple pathology and serious illnesses of old age, the number of those at risk of pressure sores has increased.
The purpose of this study was to describe predisposing factors in pressure sore development and identify on the aspects of pressure sore care through analysis of 20 cases studies.
The study was conducted by nursing students of R Junior College of Nursing put into the Practicum, from August to November, 1993. For the purpose of the study, the collected date were analyzed by frequency and content.
@ES The results are summerized as follows:
@EN 1. The characteristics of patients with pressure sores.
Pressure scores revealed to be lecated on 11 body sites; mostly on the pelvic region (50%) and on the lower extremities (23%), notably the heels.
80% of the patients revealed to have two pressure sores or more.
Classifying pressure sores by Bennett, Grade 1: 12 cases, Grade 2: 3 cases, Grade 3: 4 cases, Grade 4: 1 case, Grade 5:2 cases were founded.
According to the pressure sore risk rating scale(Norton scale) 45% of the patients who were very bad in physical condition, and 55% of them were alert. 95% were bedfast, 55% were immobile. 50% were incontinent of urine, doubly. 90% of the
patients
were
considered to be at risk of developing further pressure sores.
2. The aspects of pressure sore care.
70% of the patients were observed the skin by the nurses in assessing risk. None of the scales had been used.
62. 5% of the patients being turned 2 hourly by the relatives. None of them were used turning schedule(eg., 24 hour turning clock).
Patients with pressure sores were received 55% of Alcohol back massage with powder, or 55% of Alcohol back massage only, or pressure area massage.
Of the patients with sores had been nursed on air mattress more than water mattress.
3. Evaluation of pressure sore care given by nursing students.
Open-ended questions were being used.
20 kinds of key concepts and key descriptions were classified by 4 categories.
Those were nursing behaviors, attitude/spirit, education and all other.
